Meet Our Staff

Lucy Whitehead - Nursery Owner
Qualification: MA Personnel & Development, BA (hons) Business Studies, NVQ Level 3 Diploma.

Lucy is the daughter of the original founders of Rainbow Corner Nursery School - Jacqui and Geoff Scott. Lucy acquired the family business in April 2013, although the nursery school has always been a big part of her life. Prior to this Lucy completed a four year Business Studies degree at the University of Portsmouth, specialising in Human Resources.

Once graduated, Lucy worked as an HR Consultant for both the BBC and Orange Business Services in London, during which time she gained a Masters in Personnel and Development at the University of Westminster and became a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). In 2010 Lucy had her son, Elliot. Being a parent herself and understanding the importance of good quality childcare, she naturally became more involved in the family business. She has since completed her NVQ Level 3 Diploma for the children and young people's workforce.

Emma Fowles - Nursery Manager
Qualification: NVQ Level 4 Diploma, currently in the final year of her degree in Early Years Care and Education at the University of Portsmouth.
Start Date: July 2015

Emma joined us as nursery manager in 2015 having held that position at a previous setting for 2 years and prior to that had held posts as Deputy Manager, Senior Nursery Nurse and Nursery Nurse.

Emma has dedicated her adulthood to working with and supporting children to learn and develop within a childcare setting. Since starting her career in childcare she has made every effort to further educate herself, gaining a level 2, 3 and 4 NVQ in Childcare as well as an NVQ Level 2 in Team Leading and is now currently studying towards a degree in Early Years Childcare.

Kathleen Lines - Nursery Administrator
Start Date: June 2014

Kath works part-time in the office supporting both Lucy and Emma. Prior to joining Rainbow Corner, Kath had held a number of Receptionist and Administrative positions.

Clare Purdy - Deputy Manager and Room Leader
Qualification: NVQ Level 4, NNEB, NVQ Assessor and NVQ Verifier
Start Date: March 1996

Having completed the NNEB in 1992, Clare travelled to Switzerland where she cared for a girl of nine years with Cerebral Palsy and her younger brother aged 3 years.

On returning to the UK, Clare work for two families as a nanny before joining Rainbow Corner. Since joining the nursery, Clare has continued with her studies gaining an NVQ Assessor and Verifiers award and an NVQ level 4 in Childcare and Management.

In 2004 Clare had her daughter Maddie and then in 2009 her son Luca was born.

Linda Smith - Deputy Manager and Room Leader
Qualification: NVQ Level 3 Diploma
Start Date: September 1994

Linda has been a long serving member of staff, joining 10 years after the school was first established and growing and changing with us as the needs of the business have evolved. Linda has a wealth of experience across the whole EYFS spectrum and of working with our pre-school age children. Linda works extremely hard with both the children and parents to ensure the children have all the skills they will require when they transition to infant school. Alongside the Manager, Linda assists with the induction of new members of staff and students and assists with in-house training. Linda has a son and is also a very proud grandparent.

Sharon Hammond - Room Leader
Qualification: NVQ Level 3 Diploma
Start Date: May 2013

Sharon holds an NVQ Level 3 in childcare and a BA Honours in English Language and Literature. Sharon joined us with a wealth of experience in childcare, having worked in nursery schools since 2007. She has a particular interest in helping children to develop speech, language and communication. Sharon also has one grown up daughter of her own.

Lucy Karsenbarg – Deputy Room Leader
Qualification: BA (hons) Childhood and Youth Studies
Start Date: January 2017

Lucy joined us in early 2017 having previously worked as volunteer Youth Worker, Teaching Assistant, Nursery Nurse and finally a Pre-School Room Leader for the past 7 years. Lucy currently works alongside our Pre-School Room Leader to support our growing pre-school room. She comes with a wealth of knowledge and has a particular interest in working with children with special educational needs.

Carla Shelley - Nursery Practitioner
Qualification: NVQ Level 3 Diploma
Start Date: April 2002

Carla has two children and works for us part-time. She too has a vast amount of experience working with all age groups within the nursery, having worked with us for a number of years.

Colette Lewis – Nursery Practitioner
Qualification: NVQ Level 3 Diploma
Start Date: June 2014

Colette has a City & Guilds working with children from 0-7 years awarded in 1992. Then gained a (Cache) Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education in 2005. Prior to working at Rainbow Corner Colette spent four years in Turkey and three years in India working as a Language Support Assistant.

Sally Squibb – Nursery Practitioner
Qualification: NVQ Level 3 Diploma
Start Date: December 2012

Sally has worked at Rainbow Corner for 2 Years and has worked with children aged from 0-4 years old. Sally is qualified NVQ 3 in childcare. Prior to this Sally worked as an agency worker in a variety of childcare settings within the city of Portsmouth.

Nicola Morgon – Nursery Practitioner
Qualification: NVQ Level 3 Diploma
Start Date: April 2016

Nicola worked as a Nursery Apprentice at a previous setting and joined Rainbow Corner once she had achieved her Level 3 qualification. Nicola also has a qualification in photography and is a keen artist, skills which are highly valued within the nursery.

Abbie Hendry – Nursery Practitioner
Qualification: NVQ Level 3 Diploma – to be completed autumn 2017
Start Date: May 2016

Abbie joined us in May 2016 to undertake her 12 month apprenticeship. After successful completion of this, Abbie accepted a permanent position as a Nursery Practitioner. During her time with us, Abbie has gained experience of working with all age groups, in particular the toddler room. Abbie is looking forward to the extra responsibilities and challenges she will now gain as a qualified member of staff.

In addition to our permanent members of staff we continually have a number of apprentices working with us to gain practical experience whilst working towards their formal childcare qualifications. We also have a number of bank staff, who are employed and vetted by us to cover lunches, staff sickness, training and annual leave. Most of our bank staff are recruited from the University of Portsmouth where they are currently studying towards a childcare related degree.
